The first edition of LoL Worlds took place in 2011. It wasn’t much at the time but it helped to popularize League of Legends, which had been launched in 2009. The LoL Worlds format includes 4 stages: Play-In Round 1 and Round 2, Group Stage, and Playoffs.

The first round of LoL Worlds’ Play-In consists of 4 Groups of 3 teams. The top 2 teams from each group advance to the next stage. Every match is Bo1.

The second round of LoL Worlds’ Play-In consists of just 4 matches. All of them are Bo5 and their winners advance to the Group Stage.

The Group Stage consists of 4 groups of 4. The double round-robin format is used, which means that each team plays against every other team twice. The top 2 teams from each group advance to the Playoffs. Every match is Bo1.

The Playoffs is a single-elimination tournament. Every match here is Bo5.
